BB Movie Review - Morbidly Beautiful

BB - Official Stills "It’s truly impressive what Wallis was able to achieve with such a small amount of money and a scant two-person crew. This film looks and feels much bigger than it is. This is independent film at its finest, and I recommend it without hesitation!"

SEXY, STYLISH INDIE HORROR OFFERS REVEALING LOOK INTO THE DANGEROUS WEB CAM WORLD

One of my favorite things about being a film reviewer is the opportunity to discover and help others discover hidden gems — truly independent films that get very little fanfare or exposure, but often represent some of the best and most surprising filmmaking. I recently had the opportunity to check out one such film, BB, the debut feature from filmmaker CJ Wallis.

BB Movie Review - Horror Freak News

BB - Official Stills "BB is getting plenty of positive reviews, but I can’t offer it more than a 3-star rating.  That’s certainly not the kiss of death, but not the ultimate bit of glowing praise a filmmaker might want either"

Leah Lamont (played by Jennifer Mae – who also co-produces here) – otherwise known as Candy Cummings – takes a job as a web-cam girl – doing strip-tease, masturbating for her on-line clients and playing out the many varied fantasies for those on the other side of the camera.  Her initial reason for taking the job is to make some quick cash so that her girlfriend Alina (Victoria Fox) could return home to Bucharest and reconnect with her family.  Alina falls into the same old traps she once escaped (mostly drug use) and refuses to return Leah’s calls.  Adding to Leah’s frustration over her deteriorating relationship, one of her on-line customers and apparent war veteran “Horny Hal” (Kristian Hanson – also co-producing) begins cyber-stalking her – illegally tapping into her web-cams and following her every move.  He loses out on a date that “Candy” has offered, and he violently reacts by beating up the actual lottery winner of the night out.  Eventually, he kidnaps Leah.

BB Movie Review - Mr Rumsey

BB - Official Stills "Its early scenes, exploitative as they are, at least hint at an interesting movie; maybe one about relationships and the meaning of fidelity; maybe one about the ambiguous nature of exploitation; maybe one about the nature of drug addiction."

We venture into this synth infused take on camgirls, obsession and exploitation…

Our hero is a girl named Leah Lamont (Jennifer Mae) rather than, as you might have assumed, BB. Like several of the films’ characters, she has an alliterative name; perhaps this is set in some sort of adult version of the Marvel Universe. I say an adult version as, in the first scene of the film, LL attends an interview with Madame CC – Candace Camera – in the hopes of becoming a camgirl. A camgirl is a type of adult performer who engages in video calls with clients, who can pay to see them perform certain acts. LL takes on a stage name of CC – Candy Cummings – and, for a brief time, the life of a camgirl looks rosy; she’s raking in enough to buy her Romanian-American girlfriend first-class tickets to Bucharest, to visit her family during a time of crisis. But, wouldn’t you know it, before too long things have turned sour; her girlfriend may or not be involved with dodgy drugs and a dodgy ex and, more immediately concerning, she’s being stalked by a wounded veteran with a screenname of HH – HornyHal – though only we, the viewers, are privy to his identity, which is made clear to us in a series of his taped video-confessions.

BB Movie Review - Escapist Magazine

BB - Official Stills
"A strong independent movie, BB is worth your time!"

BB - The Camgirl Stalker Movie You Didn't Know You Wanted
by Matthew Parkinson, September 25th, 2016.

Directed and written by C.J. Wallis. Produced by Brandon Eames, Mousa Hamdan, Kristian Hanson, and Jennifer Mae. Release date: August 18, 2016.

It's often the case that the best films go unseen - in large part because of the way that the Hollywood system works. Gross simplification incoming. As budgets increase, filmmaker creativity goes down. You need to appeal to the masses in order to make your money back - if you're able to get financed at all. Lots of smaller movies make it onto the festival circuit, but distribution isn't guaranteed. And then you have something like BB, which was self-financed and released on its own website. You won't see something like it at your local multiplex, or even likely at a normal festival. It's a niche film but a good one.

BB Movie Review - Brutal As Hell

BB - Official Stills
"BB is never less than compelling viewing, and is well worth your time and money!"

While sex work in any capacity tends to be euphemistically dubbed ‘the oldest profession,’ no facet of that field is more uniquely modern than that of the cam girl, a performer entertaining untold numbers of strangers online with intimate displays into webcams. Naturally this is a subject matter that’s begging to be explored on film, as it not only offers ample opportunity for classic titillation tactics, it also presents us with compelling questions as to just what drives people to get into this line of work, as well as what might drive those who patronize their service.

This, put very simply, is what BB is all about, and from that bare-bones premise we might easily anticipate something very sleazy and exploitative, particularly once we factor in that the central character is also gay, and much of the film’s early scenes are taken up by sex scenes. However, while the feature debut from director CJ Wallis is indeed filled to the brim with nudity and sexual content, with more than a dash of horror movie in the mix, the primary emphasis is on character-based drama, exploring themes of isolation, loneliness and miscommunication, and the strange way in which these feelings are only intensified by modern communications technology which should, in theory, be bringing us closer together.

BB Movie Review - Sinful Celluloid

BB - Official Stills
"A+. There is a voyeuristic aspect to BB that will entice you and maintain a chokehold on your attention!"

 "JENNICA GIVES BB AN A+"

There is not anything on this planet more gratifying than the attention gained from fame. The more you shine, the more you crave it. You are a face. You are a personality. And people love you as if their lives depend on your every smile, your every gesture. Your addiction to the adoration is like a sickness. But sometimes your fans are sicker. Like you, sometimes your fans blur the lines between fantasy and reality, only they take the fantasy to a new level of objectification. Behind the mascara and the lipstick is a woman— a human being with real life problems— who is just waiting for the cameras to be shut off. Her name is Leah Lamont… but you can call her “Candy.”

BB Movie Review - Infernal Cinema

BB - Official Stills "
Indie film making at it’s most productive, BB is a striking and powerful look at a modern phenomena!"

Out: Now / Runtime: 88 minutes / Rating: N/A / Fortyfps / Director: CJ Wallis

Leah who, under the name “Candy Cummings”, performs strip shows online from her apartment for thousands of strangers every day, never fully knows the extent of the evils that could be watching on the other side of the screen. But she will soon find out…

Made on a near non-existent budget and with a tiny cast and crew, BB takes a classic concept and adds a very modern, 21st century twist to it while proving quality movies can be made with little resources.

The idea, a man becoming infatuated with a young woman from afar despite having never met her, has been seen in dozens of movies. The stalking, the harassment and the eventual kidnapping are all time worn tropes of this type of story. Infernal Cinema recently reviewed Honeymoon/Luna De Miel which touched upon similar. BB, however, adds ‘cam girls’ into the mix. These women, who perform on webcams for whoever is watching and willing to pay them to do ‘more’, have became popular in recent years. Some have became ‘celebrities’ and they have thousands of fans.

BB Movie Review - 3 Minute Review

BB - Official Stills
"A gritty, raw character drama wrapped in the veneer of the low-budget thriller!"

The hook for micro-budgeted indie film BB reads like many a B-movie thriller: A hard-up woman becomes a web-cam model to make some fast cash, only to find herself being stalked and harassed by an obsessed fan.

BB differs notably from typical direct-to-video genre fare, however, in its presentation. Filmed documentary-style, sans narration, fly-on-the-wall clips of heroine Leah (played by real-life web-cam model Jennifer Mae) are interspersed with found-footage style sequences of her #1 fan Hal (Kristian Hanson) being generally creepy and obsessive. Director/writer/editor CJ Wallis cleverly works around the absence of studio sets and effects through rapid cuts, parallel editing, and musical montages that show Leah’s life spiraling out of control while events build toward the inevitable collision between the protagonist and her tormentor.

BB Movie Review - Cinema Bluster

BB - Official Stills
"C.J. Wallis has crafted a strong independent thriller worth your time, as it balances the lines of public and private, lurid and perverse, love and obsession. This world is definitely one you will not be comfortable in"

BB Film Review: A Lurid Tale Of Online Persona

We live in a connected world, where with the single touch of a button or swipe of a screen we are immediately present in the life of another. The majority of the time, this is simply maintaining a connection with friends and family, however, in other instances, it serves more as a social contract between strangers, where each party has a mutual understanding of trust in the exchange of goods and services. And in the case of BB, the full-length feature debut of C.J. Wallis, we are given a glimpse into the prurient life of a cam girl, stripping for anonymous strangers, and the inherent dangers of presenting one’s self to the masses.

BB Movie Review - TalkHorror

BB - Official Stills "This is the early efforts of some talented people that have a bright future!"

Introduction

I was approached to review this film by C.J. Wallis, who is the man responsible for filling out most of the crew member positions on this film, such as writer, director, editor, cinematographer, producer, and so much more. Most notably, he’s just simply a pretty cool dude to shoot the shit with, which I discovered while shooting messages back and forth on Twitter.

BB Movie Review - Zisi Emporium

BB - Official Stills
"Mae excels as a fantasy girl and a passionate lover. CJ Wallis, who wrote and directed "BB" will no doubt rake in awards at film festivals in 2017!"

BB, Alienation, Desperation, Fear....
Written by Christopher Zisi

...after fear, what is the next word?  You'll see. In 2016's "BB," CJ Wallis takes us on a voyage which has the feel of a downward spiral.  From the outset, we sense carnage heading our way.  Acute characters who are so familiar to us, ushered along by horrific circumstances, and highlighted by heavy, ominous music make our feature today. A whole article could be written about the Mother Marygold music which permeates "BB," suffice to say it will carry you through one horrific ordeal. Besides, it's time for a new purple haired beauty, as Lt. Gay Ellis (UFO) from the early 1970s was our last one.

BB Movie Review - BloodGuts UK Horror

BB - Official Stills
"From the outset, BB is not your average blockbuster. Despite a pulsing soundtrack and a visual flair to rival Hollywood, the films content is wrapped around your face and does not let go!"

When Leah Lamont (Jennifer Mae) discovers the money that can be earnt by being a cam girl she realizes the life she wanted could be the one she has. Jumping into a strange world, she takes to the income and custom really well until on of her viewers (played by Kristian Hanson) realizes that the woman behind the screen might not be the one he wishes.

Holstered between PEEPING TOM and MANIAC, BB is a tense thriller that is as chilling as it is beautiful. Self funded by director CJ Wallis, this is a passion project that shows how great vision and a lust for attention can put up a fight against the mighty mainstream. Whether the focus is on passionate and quite graphic love making or the visible emotional breakdown of a woman in love, BB is a master to its own success.

BB Movie Review: Beneath The Underground

BB - Official Stills
"[Wallis] has accomplished quite a bit with this debut film. You should definitely give it a shot!"

Posted By Jason Kreuger on Aug 18, 2016

C.J. Wallis (Revolver,Runaway) is an indie filmmaker from Canada. His first full length feature (he has directed numerous shorts) will be smacking you in the face any day now. It is a memorable little film that will surely disturb and impress.

This film will not disturb in the way extreme cinema sets out to disturb, with disgusting sex and brutal gore. Instead it is disturbing from a psychological standpoint. It deals with themes of obsession, the intrusive nature of technology, and the psychological effects of war. It is also a film that tells an efficient story with a high level of production value.

BB Movie Review - CAMabis Society

BB - Official Stills "This movie is a must-see for the cam model community, lovers of uncertainty-laden thrillers, and the admirers of raw independent cult-classic level gems!"

BB Movie: Movie Review by R.J. CAMabis

As an Internet adult entertainer, one of the paramount concerns any young lady in the industry has is protecting her real-life identity from the threat of overly-obsessed, psychotic, mentally unstable fans who would love nothing more than to forcibly fulfill their twisted fantasies; at least for a split-second, they dreadfully imagine the sheer horror of being held captive, not being in control when being in control is the norm, shielded from such a fate by existing by pixels on a computer screen.

BB Movie Review - Horror Society

BB - Official Stills "BB is a well made thriller that has beautiful imagery and a great cast.  If you want a sleek and atmospheric thriller then this one was made for you!"

Director – C.J. Wallis
Starring – Jennifer Mae (High and Outside), Kristian Hanson (Sledge), and Victoria Fox
Release Date – 2016
Rating – 3.5/5
Tagline – “To get to the rainbow you gotta get through the rain”

The world is not a safe place.  I hate to say it but it’s true.  This is something I never realized until recent years after I had children.  Anything and everything can turn into a dangerous situation. Something as trivial as going to the local grocery store could end in bloodshed.  Some jobs are even more dangerous than others.  Policemen, firefighters, miners, and even cam-girls.

Over the years I have became friends with several actresses on social media after reviewing films they were in.  A few have turned to cam modeling as a way to score some money on the side when not working on a film.  One of these ladies is always open about the creepy guys and girls that make her feel uncomfortable and unsafe.

Turns out director C.J. Wallis has thought about this before and set out to make an erotic thriller starring Jennifer Mae and Kristian Hanson.  I reached out to Wallis and he was kind enough to hook me up with a link to review his new film BB.  Thanks C.J.!

BB MOVIE REVIEW - ZOMBIES DON'T RUN

BB - Official Stills "This is legit indie filmmaking that not only honors the art of being an indie film but embraces all of the perks of it to get the best results on-screen!"

BB (2016)

Directed By: C.J. Wallis

Starring: Jennifer Mae, Kristian Hanson, Victoria Fox

Rated: UR/Widescreen

Check Out the Web-site: http://www.fortyfps.com/bb.htm

BB is the provocative story of a girl named Leah who, under the name “Candy Cummings”, performs strip shows online from her apartment for thousands of strangers every day, never fully knowing the extent of evils that could be watching on the other side of the screen. If you didn’t already know it, C.J. Wallis is one of hell of a creative guy.

He’s great behind a camera, in front of one, and also great at telling a story. He uses all those skills to do just that in his film, BB. A movie about a cam girl who takes the job to help out her girlfriend but ends up getting a lot more trouble than she ever could have expected. Before we even get into the plot overall, let me just say that this movie is a gritty experience.

Noisography Reviews Elective Single

Recently named one of the Top 30 music websites across Canada by the CBC, Noisography has posted a review of "The Stitch-Up Of Bloody Mary," the first single and video from Elective, our musical side project with Kayleigh Goldsworthy. The review was written by Mr. Dan Nightgale

Video/Single Review: Elective - "The Stitch-Up Of Bloody Mary"
The music sounds like a lot of Ableton Live loops piled on top of each other but the quality is good and the drum (bongo?) sounds are deep if a little repetitive.
The vocals go high above most of the instrumentation and is clear and pleasing, and sometimes I start to worry that she's going to run out of breath with the run on sentence lyrics. A few layers move in and out on top of the drums with gentle chimes and a sliding bopping bassline.
The repeating chorus straddles the line between cliché and nostalgic but the vocal quality is very appealing and the layering makes for an emotionally moving and sweeping musical landscape. It's the peak of the relatively short song, followed by a 15 second denouement and a sudden halt to the drum landscape and it's over.
The video is pretty straight forward: artsy dancing girl. There's lots of nice cinematography and it's high quality and well shot. If you hadn't seen the new Radiohead video it would be a little easier to dismiss this as lacking in substance, but if it's good enough for Thom Yorke, it's good enough for CJ Wallis (who did it about a month earlier, just for the record).

You can check out the recently published webpage for the Elective/Bloody Mary video on our website by clicking here which has a little bit about the concept behind the editing and some production things.

Timeless Films Blog Reviews Circumference

bill & pumpkin

This November 2009 review on Circumference was brought to our attention recently and it was very kind so we thought we would repost it here to save for a cloudy day:

"Allow me this time to deviate from my original form of exclusively discussing graphic design and I will be venturing into the art of cinema. Now as one who prides himself on his knowledge of film and everything surrounding it, I was surprised to find that I had not heard anything about the filmmaker C.J. Wallis until recently. So my guess is that there is a very high probability any who are reading this will not be familiar with his work either. But let me share with you one of his most original works. It is called Circumference, created in 2006 and shot entirely in HD.
It was created on a competition basis being chosen out of over 80 pitches in the Crazy8's competition. It challenges filmmakers to make a short film entirely within 8 days on a strict budget of $800 and only allowing you 30 minutes of raw footage to be shot. While all that is a separate task in itself, the astonishing thing about this film is that it is seems as one 10 minute long tracking shot that takes you through the story.
Now it is not exactly one entire tracking shot as they did need to take multiple shots and cuts, however they use extremely hard to replicate editing techniques to blend it all together and make it seem like one fluid tracking shot. So you might see the main character walking in and closing a door which appears to be a film set, but when someone else walks outside it is now the outside of someone's house, and when someone walks back into that door again it is the inside of an office building.
Frankly, I am still trying to figure out how he did it. You certainly can't just pick up a camera and wing it with that huge of an idea. Most people wouldn't be able to do what he did period, but the fact that he was able to accomplish that cinematic feat all under those competitive restraints shows how much careful planning and design went into every little detail before they could start shooting.
Furthermore, he is one who's style I will be looking out for, because his display of talent is very promising in my eyes. So if you can spare about 10 minutes to be amazed, I would seriously recommend you checking out the film, and I will even provide the link for you... http://vimeo.com/5148021
Hope you enjoy!
